A Misunderstanding

We have discovered that some teachers shy away from the Fitzroy Readers when they hear that it is a systematic phonics approach. Why is this so? Because they have encountered other systematic phonic methods (old-fashioned methods) which require children to swallow a large slab of theory or pronunciation rules before they ever start to read stories.

The Fitzroy Method has just the opposite approach. We start with stories and gently add awareness of new digraphs, story by story. Once you know the basic sounds of 13 basic letters of the alphabet, you can read Story 1!

Furthermore, we don’t try to put all the myriad ways of spelling English sounds into a system. For example, uncommon spelling patterns like would, could and should, are simply introduced in the Fitzroy Method as special words (like yacht and eye).
