The Fitzroy Readers and support materials use the phonic approach to literacy. The Readers were developed at Fitzroy Community School (FCS), founded in 1976 as a test-bed for advanced learning methods. FCS does not select students, it includes all its students in the national assessment programme, and the tests have been personally monitored by government officers. In reaction to the extraordinary outcomes, many teachers have bought the Fitzroy materials. Australian schools have bought well over a million Readers and related literacy materials to help their students.
